Mother gazes out to the horizon perhaps watching her husband work the fields as sister plays a game of hide and seek with the rag doll with baby brother. The title "Mother of the Plains" has a two-fold meaning. One is obvious, she is a plains woman and a Mother. The other, less obvious, but just as great, is that our great plains "mothered" a people who fueled their dreams with long tedious hours of sweat, toil and tears; suffering through unbearable hardships in losses of family members due to sickness and even murderous attacks; struggling through dust bowls, drought, fires and famine, none of which quenched their dreams or aspirations. With great courage and fortitude, they gave their children, and ours, the heritage and legacy of the great plains and this great nation. Edition #1 of 5 will be installed at Fort Morgan Museum, Fort Morgan, CO, Fall of 2002

Dawn's Column 3

As I work in clay on a sculptural piece, with wonderful music on the CD player, my studio begins to turn into a sanctuary. The joy of creating overtakes every other emotion, time seems to stop, and the Lord's directive presence becomes most evident. I can only imagine the joy Jesus has in His creation that lives and breathes, sings and dances, paints and sculpts, writes music and poetry, raises children, loves the wife, loves the husband, pats the dog, hugs the cat, brings home the bacon, and stays the course. Creativity is not limited to the arts, it comes in street clothes. God is the direct author of all that has been achieved on this planet, in space, in the arts, in science and medicine, in technology; and continues to be creatively involved in every aspect of His creation. Thanks be to God for allowing us to "borrow" His talent; and to have so much fun doing so!
