kitty and puppy sculpture lifesize by Dawn Weimer

I love the interaction of animals and we all have experienced a time when you bring home a new puppy and introduce him to the resident Queen Cat. She is mortified! As she stands there trying her best to maintain her dignity you can tell...he thinks she's sweet, but she thinks he's nothin!

For Colorado native Dawn Weimer, portraying her love of the West as a western and wildlife artist came naturally. By age three she already loved to draw and her talent was apparent. She began her art career as a painter in 1985 and was commissioned for a number of years for animal portraiture. In 1991 Dawn became curious about sculpting and completed her first bronze. She fell in love with sculpting and has never looked back! Her exceptional sense of design, coupled with natural sculpting ability quickly gained her national recognition and her work has attracted collectors worldwide.

Tom and Dawn began to notice something was very wrong with Dawn in 2003. Dawn always loved to use the computer and sculpt but she began fighting both of them. Tom was completely confused by this!

Tom knew what she had in July 2007 when she could not remember how to sign a couple of her sculptures in wax at the Loveland Foundry.  They both wanted to find out what was wrong with her and in February 2008 at age 64, Dawn was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Just 15 years before, Tom watched Dawn’s mom go through the same steps leading to Alzheimer’s disease.

"I am disappointed, frustrated, angry, tired all of the time, behind in everything and not a very happy camper, to say the least! I know what I am in for, by seeing her mother go through this same disease," said Tom.

Dawn has not been able to sculpt anything new since 2007 and will never be able to sculpt again! Her successful and fulfilling career came to aan abrubt end because of this devastating disease

Needless to say, Tom is on a mission to support Alzheimer's research to help find a cure for this devastating disease.

"We need to raise as much money as possible as soon as possible so that droves of researchers can get to work ASAP to solve this problem. I wouldn't wish this disease on my worst enemy! My wife is no longer here. Only a shell of her is here and she is so depressed at times, and me as well, that we can hardly function. Dawn has created some pretty terrific sculpture and one way or another, I will use whatever means to use this sculpture to raise money to defeat this awful disease so others will not have to go thru this! I believe that together WE will overcome this disease...just so it is sooner rather than later," Tom concluded.

"Friends of Hope" is a miniature sculpture made of PEWTER and signed by Dawn that is being sold exclusively to raise funds to support Alzheimer's research fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Fifty percent of each purchase will be donated to Alzheimer's research.

Dawn's Column 3

As I work in clay on a sculptural piece, with wonderful music on the CD player, my studio begins to turn into a sanctuary. The joy of creating overtakes every other emotion, time seems to stop, and the Lord's directive presence becomes most evident. I can only imagine the joy Jesus has in His creation that lives and breathes, sings and dances, paints and sculpts, writes music and poetry, raises children, loves the wife, loves the husband, pats the dog, hugs the cat, brings home the bacon, and stays the course. Creativity is not limited to the arts, it comes in street clothes. God is the direct author of all that has been achieved on this planet, in space, in the arts, in science and medicine, in technology; and continues to be creatively involved in every aspect of His creation. Thanks be to God for allowing us to "borrow" His talent; and to have so much fun doing so!
